Dumasova spalovací metoda má několik nesporných výhod od starší metody dle Kjeldahla: Je daleko rychlejší, levnější, bezpečnější a bez toxických odpadů. Avšak je zde ještě stále debata, která ze dvou způsobů použití Dumasovi metody je lepší: Verikální nebo horizontální uspořádání spalovací pece. Chemici LECO, odhodlaní vyřešit otázku, která metoda je přesnější a nabízí nejvíce výhod, analyzovali mnoho typů vzorků pomocí FP828 s vertikální a FP928 s horizontální pecí.
